I've pulled a few lessons from this CD-ROM, called Historical Modules for the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, which I highly recommend. It's an old cliche that history is written by the winners, and there was perhaps no greater winner in the entire history of science than Isaac Newton. As a long-term industrial consultant, .. Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control Theory also traces the historical development of the subject and features numerous exercises, notes and references at the end of each chapter, and suggestions for further study. The Doob-Meyer decomposition was a very important result, historically, in the development of stochastic calculus.
